Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Kenya has conducted surveillance for influenza since 2006. Published data from these surveillance activities have shown a substantial burden of influenza, especially among children aged less than five years.
The GIHSN study is conducted using the existing health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) in Western Kenya to estimate the incidence of influenza- and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – associated hospitalizations, and to quantify the distribution of the different influenza strains circulating in Kenya.
Data collected from this study will help bridge the gap on the burden of disease data in Kenya, particularly among the elderly as recently requested by the Kenya National Immunization Technical Advisory Group.

Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit
RMPRU is a research Unit focused on the epidemiology, transmission, prevention and diagnosis of vaccine preventable diseases. RMPRU forms part of and is administered by the Wits Health Consortium, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of the Witwatersrand.
RMPRU was established in 1997, with an original research mandate to investigate pneumococcal diseases at the molecular, epidemiological, clinical and pharmacological levels. Over time, the Unit has evolved to include investigating the clinical and molecular epidemiology of other bacteria and respiratory viruses that are associated with pneumonia and meningitis. Also, the Unit has established itself to be a premier clinical trial facility for vaccine and training platforms for post-graduate students.
The Unit has undertaken pivotal studies on pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, which have helped inform the utilisation of these vaccines in low-to-middle income countries. Also, the pneumococcal vaccine studies have helped inform the interaction of pneumococcus in relation to respiratory viruses and tuberculosis associated acute community acquired pneumonia. More recently, the Unit has further evolved to focus specifically on the epidemiology and prevention of infections during the neonatal period, including programs aimed at vaccinating pregnant women to confer passive immunity and protect infants during their first few months of life. These include studies on the influenza vaccines, GBS conjugate vaccine, pertussis vaccine and RSV vaccines.

Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Virology
The National Institute of Virology is one of the major Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was established at Pune, Maharashtra State in 1952 as Virus Research Centre (VRC) under the auspices of the ICMR and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), USA. It was an outcome of the global program of the RF for investigating the Arthropod Borne viruses. Since the studies on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors involve most of the basic principles and techniques of general virology, entomology and zoology, these viruses were also considered to be an ideal group, to begin with, for intensive training and research in virology in our country. The RF withdrew its support in 1967 and since then the Institute is entirely funded by the ICMR.

Patan Academy of Health Sciences
Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) is a non-profit, public, health science university established with an act of parliament in 2008. The central rationale for the establishment of PAHS was to contribute to the reduction of disparity in the health status among rural, urban, and disadvantaged populations in Nepal.
The site is a collaborating Oxford vaccine research group and implementing influenza surveillance project supported by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2009.
Until 2009, influenza-related surveillance work were patchy and has not had systematic effort. To systematize and strengthen influenza surveillance activities, PAHS participated in CDC influenza call and received a grant in 2009.
After the establishment of Nepal National Influenza Center in 2010, national health system started testing influenza sample within the country. Since then, Patan Academy started Influenza surveillance as one of the sentinel sites in Nepal under NIC.
Since 2011 Patan hospital sentinel sites have been collecting ILI epidemiological data and sample regularly on weekly basis.

National institute of health lslamabad Pakistan
National Institutes of Health is one of the most prestigious institutions of the country involved in multi-disciplinary public health related activities like diagnostic services, research and production of various vaccines for over 40 years.
The idea of establishing a National Health Center (NHC) was conceived in early 1960’s, which started functioning in 1965 at Islamabad. Directorate of Nutrition Survey and some other health related research organizations were shifted to NHC. Later on, all these independently working departments were integrated and designated as National Health Laboratories (NHL – Islamabad).
This organization was given the status of an autonomous organization as National Institutes of Health (NIH) under the Ministry of Health (MoH) through a presidential ordinance XLIII of 1980, to facilitate international and regional collaboration, seek technical assistance and participate in global disease control programs more effectively.

Edouard Herriot Hospital, Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Prevention
From 2017-2018 to 2019-2020
Surveillance of nosocomial influenza was set-up in Edouard Herriot hospital in 2004 to estimate the risk of hospital acquired-ILI for hospitalized patients in short-stay units, and to identify determinants associated with nosocomial Influenza infection. Determinants from the community (influenza incidence, vaccine coverage, etc.) and from the hospital (underlying diseases, two-bed rooms, vaccine coverage among HCW, etc.) are explored to describe and initiate preventive measures to avoid hospital outbreak of influenza.
Since 2012 the hospital is involved into the FluVac study. This is a case-control prospective study coordinated by the REIVAC (Réseau national d’investigation clinique en vaccinologie). The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of influenza vaccine in hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza.

Since 2005 the Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases has regularly (twice a year) submitted influenza virus isolates to the WHO Collaborating Centers in Atlanta and London.
Since 2007 was established sentinel site virologic and epidemiologic surveillance for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) from influenza. In 2008 was developed an electronic web-based data collection and analysis program at www.ukrinfluenza.com.ua to support the sentinel surveillance system. There are collected casebase SARI data on weekly manner from 10 hospitals, which are accessed for authorized persons. Above mentioned site collected data in electronic form (SARI patient registration record-book).
These data can be transmitted with virological information, but without personal data to another site if so. The information bulletin on epidemiological and virology aspects of influenza on a base of ILI and SARI sentinel surveillance data is issued on English and Ukrainian every week.
